Evening Lecture Series Cost: $20.00 per person Ages: 16 and older Hours: 7:00 - 9:00 PM Join us for our regularly scheduled adult lecture series.
Augusta State University communications professor Dr. Debra Reddin van Tuyll will discuss the effect of the Civil War on the Southern press, beginning with the impact of the 1860 Presidential campaign and the election of Lincoln. She will look specifically at the debates over what circumstances might justify secession and the transformation of the Southern press from predominately Unionist in sentiment to Secessionist. Additionally she will explore how Confederate newspapers made the transition from primarily political journals to information machines.
Dr. van Tuyll is a leading authority on the history of the Confederate press. Dr. van Tuyll’s primary interest is the southern press as a cultural product and as a creator of culture. She is presently working on a study of the socio-economic and educational distinctions between southern and northern reporters and editors in comparison to political leaders.
She is author and co-editor of two books, The Civil War and the Press from Transaction Publishers and The Southern Press in the Civil War from Greenwood. She is co-editor of a third book that will appear in December 2010, Knights of the Quill: Reassessing Confederate War Correspondents and their Civil War Reporting.
Light refreshments will be served; a tour of the museum is also included.
