The David Wills House :: Frequently Asked Questions
Visit :: Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I park?
Metered parking is available along the square in front of the David WIlls House. Additionally, garage parking is conveniently located one block away on Racehorse Alley, off of Carlisle Street and Stratton Street.

What will I see there?
This new, state of the art National Park Service museum tells the story of the battle's aftermath, the effects it had on the town and the establishment of Soldier's National Cemetery. It features the room where President Abraham Lincoln finished one of our nation's most immortal speeches...the Gettysburg Address. Museum highlights include the original bedroom furnishings used by President Lincoln during his 1863 visit, two 15-minute informational films and personal photographs and artifacts of the Wills family.

Visit our events section to learn more about our additional museum programs happening during your visit.

How much time should I allow for my visit?
The museum is a self-guided experience and can be seen at your own pace. However, in most cases visitors should plan approximately 30-45 minutes for their visit.

May I take photographs of the David Wills House?
Exterior and interior photographs are welcome. We do request that you disable the flash on your camera to help protect the artifacts. Photographs taken of the Wills House are for personal use only. For information about commercial photography contact the Museum Manager.

Who was David Wills?
David Wills was a prominent citizen in Gettysburg. He was a lawyer, judge, Pennsylvania (now Gettysburg) College alumnus, president of Gettysburg Bank and director on numerous boards and councils. Wills was charged with enacting plans for Soldiers’ National Cemetery and he invited President Lincoln to come to Gettysburg to deliver “a few appropriate remarks.”

Did anything happen there beside Lincoln’s visit?
The Wills House was at the center of the battle of Gettysburg that waged through the streets of the town July 1-3, 1863. Afterwards, the house served as a temporary hospital for the wounded.

Is there anything for my kids to do at the Wills House?
The museum features two films and two interactive stations. Children who participate in the Gettysburg National Military Park Junior Ranger program will find answers to questions about the David Wills House in the museum.

Why is there an admission fee?
Although the building and exhibits are owned by the National Park Service, the David Wills House is operated and managed by Main Street Gettysburg. Main Street Gettysburg is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization partnering, leading, and investing in the Gettysburg community. A museum incurs many expenses for its operations including utilities, maintenance and janitorial services, and staffing costs. The proceeds from your admission help Main Street Gettysburg to cover these costs and provide new programs and exhibits at the David Wills House.

What else can I do while I am downtown?
The David Wills House is conveniently located in the heart of the historic district in downtown  Gettysburg. We are surrounded by an abundance of quaint shops, antique stores, museums and galleries, weekend farmer's markets, seasonal festivals, historical walking tours, wineries, fine dining establishments and world-class hotels and bed and breakfasts. While at the David Wills House, be sure to visit the Gettysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau desk to find out more information on events and activities in and around Gettysburg.
